Ageratum
Soft clouds of powder-blue fluff—ageratum is the whisper of summer in the garden.
Petite, velvety blooms gather on compact stems, creating a hazy, romantic texture that pairs beautifully with roses, zinnias, and dahlias or stands sweetly on its own in a low, cottage-style vase.
Long-lasting and gentle, its cool blue tones soothe bouquets and borders alike, adding a touch of vintage charm to any arrangement.
DAYS TO GERMINATION: 7-10 days at 75-80°F
DAYS TO MATURITY: 80-100 (12-15wks)
SOWING:
Transplant (recommended): Sow 6-8 weeks before planting out.
Direct seeding: not recommended.
Do not cover seed as light aids germination.
Harden off and transplant after the danger of frost has passed.
SUCCESSION PLANTING: Yes
PLANT SPACING: 9-12” ; 12” for cut & come again
PINCH: Yes
PLANT HEIGHT: 24-30”
SUPPORT: Be sure to use netting AND corralling around perimeter since this LOVES to lay over. Use second layer of netting as this gets even taller throughout the season and can easily grow wonky stems.
WATER NEEDS:
LIGHT PREFERENCE: Sun. Will tolerate part shade where summers are hot.
HARVEST:
Fresh: Harvest low to encourage long side shoots, when flower spikes are 3/4 open.
Dried: Harvest when flowers are completely open; hang. May be air-dried, but the flower color often fades.
SOIL REQUIREMENTS: Fertile soil with good drainage, and a pH of 5.0-6.0.
VASE LIFE & STORAGE: 7-10 days with floral preservative
PROBLEMS: As summer progresses, foliage and yield decrease. Remove as much dead foliage as possible to avoid sources for disease.
