Ammi & Dara

Ammi and Dara are delicate, airy blooms that bring vintage charm and light movement to any bouquet or garden bed.

Both plants lend a light, ethereal quality to arrangements, creating a soft halo around focal flowers and enhancing texture without overwhelming color.

They’re favorites for a garden-style palette and natural wedding work, valued for their longevity as cut flowers and ease of blending with a wide range of stems.

DAYS TO GERMINATION: 12-15 days at 70-72°F

DAYS TO MATURITY: 65-85 days

SOWING:

May benefit from cold stratifying for 2 weeks prior to sowing.

Direct seed (recommended): In early spring after last frost. Sow seed thinly in rows, covering lightly. Don’t like their roots disturbed.

Transplant: Sow 6-8 weeks before planting out.

Harden off and transplant outdoors after last frost.

SUCCESSION PLANTING: Yes

PLANT SPACING: 6-9”

PINCH: No

PLANT HEIGHT: 36-50”

SUPPORT: Two layers of netting, especially in windy climates.

WATER NEEDS:

LIGHT PREFERENCE: Sun. Will tolerate part shade where summers are hot.

HARVEST:

Fresh: Harvest deeply by pulling down through netting, when flowers have fully opened and are laying flat. If harvested much earlier, stems have a tendency to wilt due to reduced water uptake.

**Take a look at the bloom. If it is flat or concave (sides higher than center), it is not ready. If the bloom is domed or convex (sides lower than center), then it’s ready!

Immediately upon harvest, allow to rest in a bucket of water in a cool, dark place. After resting overnight, stems should be ready for arranging.

**wear gloves and long sleeves due to sap burn when exposed to light

Dried: When the flowers are fully open and with no hint of pollen shed.

SOIL REQUIREMENTS: Average, well-drained soil. Established plants will tolerate dry soils.

VASE LIFE & STORAGE: 10-14 days, flower preservative is recommended. Ethylene-sensitive.

PROBLEMS: Sap on skin can burn when exposed to sunlight.

Pollen shed can reduce quality of flowers around them. Provide more than average space between this and other flowers.

Some varieties may have an unpleasant odor.
